Over the years of providing B&B accommodation in Skibbereen I am always asked to recommend things to do. These are the items that stand out – mind you the ranking within the list is a little arbitrary. Do check out as many of these as you can and the many more gems in the area.

Located only 5km south west of Skibbereen Lough Hyne (also spelled Ine) is Ireland’s first marine nature reserve. Bring a picnic and enjoy the peace and beauty of this idyllic place. Enjoy a swim, a walk or a paddle in a kayak.

Skibbereen Heritage Centre

2. Skibbereen Heritage Centre

A three minute walk away, the Skibbereen Heritage Centre has two permanent exhibitons, one on the Great Famine, the second on Lough Hyne. The Skibbereen area was one of the worst affected by the Irish Famine of the 1840s.

Skibb Farmers Market

3. Skibbereen Farmers Market

Skibbereen Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 9:30am - 1:30pm in the town centre. Great range of fresh local produce as well as a diverse selection of quality local art and crafts. Great way to start your weekend.

Whale Watching

4. Whale Watching

The waters of the West Cork boast all manner of marine life, from friendly dolphins to majestic whales and many a fin and flippered creature in between. Take a tour with Whale Watch West Cork in Baltimore, or Cork Whale Watch based on Reen Pier, near Union Hall, or Tom Collins all of who operate all year round.

Island Hopping

6. Island Hopping

Off the coast of West Cork are the popular islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin Island and Hare Island. With each island having its own special character travellors can fully immerse themselves in island life during their stay. Ferries depart from Baltimore and Roaringwater Bay daily all year round.

Throughout West Cork there’s a delightful selection of routes waiting, no matter what your level of fitness. From idyllic Bantry Bay to historic Skibbereen and of course lively Kinsale, discover unspoilt territories and hidden coves as you amble through County Cork’s array of charming towns and villages on a number of looped walking routes.

West Cork Garden trail - Visit 19 fabulous gardens in Ireland’s Garden paradise. The gardens on the trail have been divided into five geographical areas covering Kinsale, Clonakilty, Roaringwater Bay, Sheep’s Head and Bears Peninsula.
